Preventing Bleeds & Joint Damage

Preventing Joint Damage in Hemophilia

Significant joint damage used to be common in people with hemophilia. However, with advances in treatment, joint damage can now mostly be avoided. Many hemophilia treatment centres recommend the use of prophylaxis, and the administration of clotting Factor at regular intervals to ensure there is always a small amount of clotting Factor in their blood in case of injury.

There are four main components of preventing joint damage:

  1. Preventing Bleeds
  2. Early and Complete Treatment of Each Joint Bleed
  3. Early Identification and Treatment of Joint Damage
  4. Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle
