Preventing Bleeds

Whenever possible, the best way to avoid joint damage is to prevent bleeding from occurring in the first place. There are different methods to prevent bleeds, including:

  • Taking precautions before participating in activities where the joints might be stressed. This might include protective gear for the knees and elbows. Go to Sports and Activities to learn more about which sports and activities are appropriate for you, which to avoid, and what precautions you should take while participating in your chosen activities.
  • Prophylactic clotting Factor therapy. Your healthcare provider may recommend taking a regular dose of clotting Factor therapy to prevent bleeds before they start. For patients with less severe hemophilia, a dose of clotting Factor may be administered only before certain activities, such as active sports.2, 3 Prophylaxis is also used before surgery and tooth extraction. See Dental Care Tips for more information.
  • Muscle strengthening. Strong muscles help protect and cushion joints, resulting in fewer joint bleeds. Try to incorporate a muscle strengthening program into your weekly routine.

However, even with appropriate precautions, some bleeds may still occur. This is when early and complete treatment of each joint bleed comes into play.
