How to Maintain Healthy Teeth

Keeping a healthy mouth to prevent dental problems is important for a person with hemophilia. This will not only improve your quality of life and nutrition, but will also help avoid the dangers of surgery.

The World Federation of Hemophilia offers the following guidelines for dental care:

  • Teeth should be brushed at least twice daily for plaque control.
  • Toothpaste containing fluoride should be used.
  • Mouthwashes of triclosan or chlorhexidine can also help reduce plaque.
  • Dental floss or interdental brushes help reduce plaque.
  • People with bleeding disorders need close cooperation between their physician and their dental practitioner to receive safe, comprehensive dental care.

Remember to let your Healthcare Treatment Centre (HTC) know of any new and/or upcoming dental appointments as it’s best to provide the dentist or orthodontist with your hemophilia care-related information well in advance.
