What to Consider

Couples thinking of starting a family have every reason to feel excited and optimistic about having children. Genetic counselling can help couples make informed choices when there is a possibility of having a child with hemophilia. This includes tests for diagnosis and carrier detection, as well as individual counseling.

Most hemophilia treatment centres offer genetic counselling with Genetic Counsellors, who have the knowledge and training to answer all questions individuals with hemophilia or potential carriers might have. Other healthcare providers such as physiotherapists, social workers, psychologists, and laboratory personnel can also offer information and advice. However, before offering advice or information, healthcare providers should be trained in genetic counselling and have good knowledge of hemophilia, tests that are available, and people trained to interpret your test results..
